Thassos in May: One of the best times to visit the island

Pleasant weather, empty beaches, wildflowers, and the rhythmic sound of waves. Discover why late spring is the ultimate time to explore Thassos.

The gently warm late spring weather is ideal for enjoying the outdoors and experiencing the island in its more raw, authentic form. Thassos in May has something for everyone. Relaxing walks by the beach and through the olive groves, a coffee and delicious food with the sound of waves as the backdrop, meeting and getting to know the locals, hiking, trekking, mountain biking, kayaking, all while escaping the crowds and the peak summer heat.

It is the best time of the year to walk around, enjoy the nature, take pictures, and have the most popular beaches and spots in the island almost entirely to yourself.

Key dates

One of the best times to visit Thassos, Greece is from mid-May to mid-June. The weather is pleasant, without being too warm and there is a good balance between cafes and restaurants being open and the crowds being low.

For the earlier part of May expect much fewer people but also fewer businesses being open (accommodation, cafes, restaurants, activities), especially outside of weekends and away from the island’s capital, Limenas (Thassos town). The weather in early May is normally pleasant during the day with average highs of 21°C but gets cooler in the evening with average lows of 11° C.

School summer holidays in Greece start at around the 15th of June so tourism increasingly picks up after that as the island heads towards the July-August high season.

A date to be aware of is Agiou Pneumatos (Αγίου Πνεύματος), a Greek public holiday in celebration of the Holy spirit. It always falls on a Monday, creating a long weekend for many Greeks with Thassos being a popular destination to enjoy it. Expect the island to be noticeably busier during then. For the next few years, Agiou Pneumatos falls on:

2026: Monday 1 June
2027: Monday 21 June
2028: Monday 5 June
2029: Monday 28 May

The Joy of "Slow" Relaxation

Nature intended Thassos to be experienced like this. My mother often says May reminds her of how the island felt when she was growing up: unhurried and lush.

Enjoy fewer people and less sunbeds crowding the coast. Take relaxing walks by the beach where all you can hear is the sound of the waves. Everything moves at a slower pace in May. The locals and the staff have more time and energy to engage in conversation, share stories, become friends. The most popular beaches often feel like hidden gems. Thassos in May offers an escape from the business of everyday life, an opportunity to get closer to nature and the chance to find your own small piece of paradise and enjoy it all to yourself.

Top Things to Do in Thassos in Late Spring

1. Hiking and Nature Walks

Enjoy the late spring’s gentle warmth and explore the island’s beautiful nature. Thassos is a very green, lush island, covered in pine and chestnut trees and olive groves all the way to the sea. Walk by the beach, through the forests scenic villages and olive groves and enjoy the spring wildflowers.

If you prefer a bigger challenge you can hike Ipsarion, the 1,204m (3,950 feet) tall mountain  that lies in the center of Thassos island. It offers breathtaking views of the pine forests and the open sea with many viewpoints all around it and a gorgeous view at the top. The trail to the peak is physically demanding and at parts exposed to the sun so it is best enjoyed during the gentler late spring weather. (A guide to mount Ypsario).

Kayaking the Emerald Coast

There are kayak rentals across the island, especially on popular beaches like Golden Beach but their opening dates and locations can vary year by year so I would advise contacting the providers in advance to ensure all information is up to date.

At Endless Blue & our sister hotel Iliorama we offer free kayaks for our guests to use and explore the beauty of Golden Beach.

The following pictures were taken on the 28th of April on my first kayak adventure for the year. It was incredibly peaceful, and I loved looking towards the empty sandy beach with the dramatic mountain backdrop from the sea.

Value for Money: Travel Smarter

Traveling in May isn’t just about the atmosphere. It’s also about the budget.

The prices of accommodation, flights and activities tend to be significantly lower in the May to early June period compared to mid-June to September. The staff and the locals are more relaxed and have more time and energy to provide excellent quality, personalized service. There are almost no queues at popular restaurants and cafes, and it is easy to find a sunbed even on the most popular beaches of the island. Visiting near the start of the season offers a more relaxing and authentic experience, while you also save on time, and you get more value for your money.

Is Thassos in May Right for You?

While we love this time of year, it’s not for everyone. Consider these points:

The water temperature may be a bit cool for swimming for some, especially in early May. The average water temperature in May is around 18°C and in June around 24°C.

While some businesses are open all year or open early in the season, the level of choice for food, drinks and accommodation can be limited, especially at the earlier part of the May. If you are interested in a vibrant nightlife, Greek live music nights or an overall livelier atmosphere May might not be the best month for you.
